Welcome to Newport Beach
Newport Beach is where Southern California coastal luxury meets laid-back harbor-town charm. Sailboats drift past the Balboa Pier, surfers chase swells at The Wedge, and sunset cocktails on a rooftop deck are basically a civic duty. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a week, this stretch of Orange County coastline delivers the kind of getaway that makes you start browsing Zillow.
What to Do
Balboa Island & the Fun Zone
Take the Balboa Island Ferry (it’s been running since 1919) across the harbor for a few bucks and a postcard-worthy photo. Once on the island, grab a frozen banana from one of the shops on Marine Avenue — it’s a local rite of passage. The Balboa Fun Zone has a vintage Ferris wheel and arcade games that are worth the nostalgia trip alone.
Crystal Cove State Park
Just south of town, Crystal Cove offers 3.2 miles of pristine beach and a historic district of 1930s-era beach cottages (some available to rent through California State Parks). The tide pools at low tide are spectacular — sea anemones, hermit crabs, and if you’re lucky, an octopus. Hiking trails wind through the coastal bluffs with panoramic ocean views.
The Wedge & Surf Culture
The Wedge at the end of the Balboa Peninsula is one of the most famous bodysurfing spots in the world. When a south swell hits, waves can top 25 feet. Even if you’re not getting in the water, it’s worth watching the locals who make it look effortless. For gentler surf, 56th Street and Blackies (near the pier) are beginner-friendly breaks.
Whale Watching & Harbor Cruises
Newport Harbor is one of the largest recreational harbors on the West Coast. Book a whale-watching trip (gray whales in winter, blue whales in summer) or rent an electric Duffy boat for a self-guided harbor cruise. Davey’s Locker and Newport Landing are the two main operators.
Shopping & Strolling
Fashion Island is an open-air shopping center with ocean views and more than 100 stores. For a more local experience, walk the Balboa Peninsula boardwalk or browse the boutiques along Coast Highway in Corona del Mar.
Where to Eat
Newport Beach dining runs the gamut from casual fish tacos to white-tablecloth seafood with harbor views. A few local favorites:
Bear Flag Fish Co. — Fresh-caught fish plates, poke bowls, and fish tacos. Casual counter-service with outdoor seating. A local staple on the Balboa Peninsula.
The Cannery — Waterfront dining in a converted cannery building. Great raw bar, strong seafood menu, and a lively happy hour on the patio.
Malibu Farm — Farm-to-table restaurant at the end of the pier on Lido Island. Outstanding brunch and some of the best water-view seating in town.
Bluewater Grill — Reliable seafood with harbor views. Good for families and groups. The clam chowder is a safe bet.
Where to Stay
Skip the hotel and book a vacation rental — you’ll get more space, a full kitchen, and often a private rooftop deck or harbor view. Arrival Getaways manages a curated selection of Newport Beach properties:
Browse large-group Newport Beach homes — spacious 4- and 5-bedroom houses perfect for family reunions, friend trips, and celebrations.
Browse ocean-view properties — wake up to the sound of waves in properties from Newport Beach to the Oregon coast.
Browse homes with pools — because it’s not a proper SoCal vacation without a pool.
Local Tips
Parking: Street parking on the Balboa Peninsula fills up fast in summer. Arrive before 10am for beach parking, or use the public lot at the Balboa Pier.
Best beach for families: Corona del Mar State Beach has gentle waves, fire rings, and restrooms. Perfect for kids.
Best beach for surfing: Blackies (near the pier) for beginners, The Wedge for experts only. River Jetty (Santa Ana River) for a quieter intermediate break.
When to visit: September and October are the sweet spot — warm water, fewer crowds, and the light is golden. June gloom is real (morning marine layer burns off by noon). Winter is surprisingly pleasant with temps in the 60s and empty beaches.
Getting around: Rent a beach cruiser. Newport is flat, scenic, and bike-friendly. Most vacation rentals include bikes or have them nearby.
